Grande Dame Permanent Video Installation!

Ladies & Gentlemen! I am very pleased to announce that my video installation at The St Leonard Public House has been such a success, that the owners have asked to make it permanent! Wowowow!!! My second permanent video installation in the UK! Of course Brighton folk will be familiar with my installation at the Joker Pub – Next the world! ha! Funny, cos it was a last minute idea. I had planned to have projections on the PV night. But using their projector & screen would mean a big wall of work would have to be covered. I toyed with the idea of bringing my own projector and leaving it up for the shows duration, but projectors are fiddly and can be diff to operate. Then it hit me – flat screen telly! I did a post on fb asking if any friends had old ones they wanted to sell. And it just so happened my lovely neighbors and collaborators in couture shoes – The De havilland’s – just happened to have a telly which fit perfectly in my fancy gold frame! Kismet! Yay! So, if you are in the St Leonard vicinity, pop in for a drink & Tune In & Turn On! More amazing news soon! oxo GD

ELECTRIC CRAZYLAND – TONIGHT!

Tonight is the night! I can’t believe it! Nearly got it all together! Just going down in a bit to fix a couple of things and hang the flat screen telly. I was just going to have a projector on the night showing visuals, but then it hit me – no – get a flat screen tv and have all the animations on a USB stick and play it throughout the duration of the show. The animation thing is so integral to my working process. In fact you will see many of the works I have in frames moving in the videos – it’s how I roll!

Here’s a few sneak peak pix. Big thanx to Oliver Crowther, Allen Clarke, & Jo Perfect for the hanging help!

How bout them lightboxes eh? Rad! So so so pleased! They really work in that space so well! Yay! Anyhoo, the other day I thought I would make a little ad for my iphone app to play in between the videos. Of course my app is the same name as the show – I kinda name every thing Electric Crazyland, it just kinda fits my lifestyle ya know? Ha! Anyhoo, it was just meant to be a lil visual addition for my show, but then I thought “why not upload it to Facebook? But then realised – it’s a minute long – I gotta have a sound track! I dug around my folders looking for old jam/ riffs – and then I found my old Soho Radio Theme Song of the same name – Electric Crazyland! I threw it in at the last minute – and it just happened to be the same length and the images change on the beat! Total accident – meant to be OBVS! So turn it up & enjoy! And if you are free tonight & in the East Sussex area – pop in and experience my colourful Electric Crazyland vibes! Ok ciao for now! Toodles oxo GD

Presenting At My First Academic Conference!

I can not believe I just wrote that headline! Honestly, not a sentence I ever imagined I would utter in my lifetime – that I would be showing my work at an academic conference. Ever! But it is true! After nearly 4 months of very hard work, I am happy to announce that my animated short – A Star Named Carson – is ready to debut at Carson McCullers in the World: A Centenary Conference at John Cabot University in Rome! I am super happy with the video too! Relief!
Being the daughter of a University Librarian, I grew up around books. The Ballad of The Sad Cafe was my first grown up book. I think I was 12 when my mom brought it home for me to read. I fell in love with her writing style. The characters were strange yet relatable. Very relatable. Shortly after I read it. Mama brought home a copy of Dr Virginia Carr’s biography on Carson. As soon as I read the first line, my mind was blown.
It opens up with a young Carson and best friend going to the fair to see the midway sideshow. As a kid the fair was my favorite time of year as well. I lived for it. Of course the sideshow had nearly died out by the 70s, but my dad had lots of books. In fact after years of my daily handling of his copy of We Who Are Not As Others – the binding disintegrated and was just a pile of loose papers. It wasn’t just being born & raised in the same town, and the love of the fair and similar young obsessions, but being an oddball in a Deep South Bible Belt Town. Where people laughed at you for not falling in line. I hated growing up there, it was stifling and lonely. But as a 12 year old young person, reading her biography, it was almost like a lifeline to me. I thought “Look, she grew up here and managed to leave and do great things with her life, I can do it too!” It saved me.

I never imagined one day I would be animating her life story! Incredible! It’s come full circle. I am planning on releasing it online sometime in fall, as well as a digital music download, with remixes. Yes I did music! After a 7 year break – I’m back! Woo! Well I better get packing! Mamma and I leave in the morning! I jokingly told her “Hey, maybe this will be my new thing, doing the academic circuit, then I’ll be awarded an honorary doctorate in AWESOMENESS! Ha! More soon! oxo gd
