Presenting At My First Academic Conference!

I can not believe I just wrote that headline! Honestly, not a sentence I ever imagined I would utter in my lifetime – that I would be showing my work at an academic conference. Ever! But it is true! After nearly 4 months of very hard work, I am happy to announce that my animated short – A Star Named Carson – is ready to debut at Carson McCullers in the World: A Centenary Conference at John Cabot University in Rome! I am super happy with the video too! Relief!
Being the daughter of a University Librarian, I grew up around books. The Ballad of The Sad Cafe was my first grown up book. I think I was 12 when my mom brought it home for me to read. I fell in love with her writing style. The characters were strange yet relatable. Very relatable. Shortly after I read it. Mama brought home a copy of Dr Virginia Carr’s biography on Carson. As soon as I read the first line, my mind was blown.
It opens up with a young Carson and best friend going to the fair to see the midway sideshow. As a kid the fair was my favorite time of year as well. I lived for it. Of course the sideshow had nearly died out by the 70s, but my dad had lots of books. In fact after years of my daily handling of his copy of We Who Are Not As Others – the binding disintegrated and was just a pile of loose papers. It wasn’t just being born & raised in the same town, and the love of the fair and similar young obsessions, but being an oddball in a Deep South Bible Belt Town. Where people laughed at you for not falling in line. I hated growing up there, it was stifling and lonely. But as a 12 year old young person, reading her biography, it was almost like a lifeline to me. I thought “Look, she grew up here and managed to leave and do great things with her life, I can do it too!” It saved me.

I never imagined one day I would be animating her life story! Incredible! It’s come full circle. I am planning on releasing it online sometime in fall, as well as a digital music download, with remixes. Yes I did music! After a 7 year break – I’m back! Woo! Well I better get packing! Mamma and I leave in the morning! I jokingly told her “Hey, maybe this will be my new thing, doing the academic circuit, then I’ll be awarded an honorary doctorate in AWESOMENESS! Ha! More soon! oxo gd

Grande Dame GIF Comments for Twitter & Facebook!

As I continue my rise to world domination & sticker stardom, my GIFS are also gaining momentum! In fact my Interstellar Slaughter GIF has had over 10 million views! WOO!

In the past year Twitter has added a new gif button feature for posts & comments, and just recently Facebook added the same thing for comments and messenger as well. At first I just entered Grande Dame in the search, and all though many of my GIFS appeared, they were jumbled in between, Arianna Grande & Notre Dame football – ha! So, I spent 3 days last week going through all 204, tagging them with “@grandedame” and voila!

Above is an example of how to access my GIF library on Giphy. It’s that easy! Awesome! So no more boring reg type memes! All though, yes most of my gifs are arty animation loops from various works, you can use them for expressions as well!
This could be Werk, Slay, Fierce, Flawless, Diva, Relax, Chill etc…

This could be Party, Celebrate, Drunk, Sick, More Wine, Happy New Year, Birthday etc…

Yass Queen! Yes, Ok, Badass, Fierce, Gotcha, tough, etc…

As I mentioned, there are 204, so something for everyone! Make it what you want! At the end of the day, they are fun and colourful, and make you feel good, and we all need some color to make us feel better in these dark times. My small contribution. Just type – @grandedame – in the box and colorful, fun gifs galore! Enjoy! More soon! oxo GD

Grande Dame Talks to Whistleblower Gallery!

There’s a new gallery in Brighton and I am very happy to be one of the represented artists. Whistleblower Gallery is Dan Hipkin’s new project. Dan is a super amazing guy and was the former head curator of ink-d Gallery, Brighton. It was Dan’s keen eye for upcoming talent that really helped put ink-d on the map. He curated shows for Ryan Callanan, Carrie Reichardt, Modern Toss, Eelus, James Cauty, Jake-Wood Evans, Eine, Jon Burgerman, Peter Kennard, Sir Peter Blake, Sarah Shaw, Dan Baldwin, Lady Aiko, Paul Scott, Matt Smith, Maria Rivans, Alex Binnie, Pinky, Petro, Jamie Hewlett, Ian Hodgson, Andy Doig, Snub, Sten & Lex, Req, and myself; as well as many more talented artists.
I sat down with him a few weeks back and discussed many things, from growing up in the deep south, to early influences, animation, embroidery and more! Click either pic or HERE to read. So excited to be a part of this new artist hub! Watch this space! oxo GD

Had an absolute blast Weds night playing records at Spiritland with the gorgeous Simone Marie! Life has been a real struggle for all of us lately. What a treat it was to take a break from the madness and be able to hear great music on such an amazing system with so many good friends and new friends too – that’s what life is all about – connecting to each other how ever we can. And sound is a powerful medium to bring us together. We all must take time to enjoy the good things! Here is a mix of the night! 4 and half hours of killer sounds! Mind the technical difficulties! Lots of Love! oxo GD
