R.I.P. Ray Manzarek

20130520-ray2-x600-1369086926 I totally sobbed like a baby this morning upon learning the passing of Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek… Clearly I am going through something else, all though they def had a massive impact on me… I first got into them when I was 12. I was getting really into Hendrix at the time and another librarian that worked with my mom named Fred made me a cassette with their first album on it. I was instantly hooked. I bought everything I could of theirs and locked myself away in my pre teen angst bedroom blasting it up to 11. But me being the human documentary encyclopaedia that I am, it was really when I watched the doc – Mr Mojo Risin – The Making of LA Woman- that I felt a strong affinity for Mr Manzarek. He was passionate about playing the keyboard. And he did it so well. He spoke to many generations with his music. What was clear to me is that he absolutely loved what he did. And isn’t that the key to happiness? Loving what you do, having a passion and following it. A brilliant man has left this earth, but his wonderful epic sounds live on. Watch the doc below in full, witness his joy! R.I.P. Ray!! oxo gd

Do yourself a favour – BUY THIS RECORD!

artworks-000043426358-ws842u-crop When people recommend music to me, I’m normally like “yeah whatever dude”… I don’t mean to dismiss most things, but I am admittedly a music snob. Always have been. But when my buddy Liam suggested I check out this new band he produced, I gave it a listen and was totally blown away! It made it’s way into my psyche and exploded! I haven’t been this excited about a record since I discovered Lite Storm! In fact it’s been the soundtrack to my life for the last few weeks. The music and lyrics are thoughtful and intelligent without trying. And the production is absolutely stellar. Influences of The Velvets & Captain Beefheart are evident on this brilliant debut. So if you too are a discerning listener and care about the sounds that penetrate your ear canal and make their way to your subconscious – then do yourself a favour and BUY THIS RECORD! Out now! more soon… gd

New Radio Show Electric Crazland Vol1

radioposterWell it’s been years since I did my radio show – Eclectic Crazyland. What can I say? I’ve had a block. When I first started it back in 2006, I thought “Yeah, after a few shows, I’ll prob get some work out of it!” But 53 shows and over a weeks worth of rare tracks, what did I get? Absolutely fuck all! But I did get a lot of feedback from people that really dug it. So decided to try and start it up again. I changed up the formula on this one tho, NO TALKING! Just a mix. I just can’t deal, sorry! It’s a hassle to hook up my studio and plus I would have to write a new theme song and I’m not in the right head space for recording… I know I have the voice and face for talk radio & I may bring it back, but for now, just tunage! Got Cannonball Adderley & The Soul Zodiac Presents – Aries, Geza X – Isotope Soap, My old bud and Grande Dame’s guitarist on the album – John E Gorilla’s killer band – Admiral Sir Cloudsley Shovell with their track Beanstew, My 80 euro vinyl record – yes I paid 80 euros for Gypsy Moth – they did a self release in the early 90′s of demo recordings only 100 ever made – very droney psyche noise with their track LSD (yes i am a mug! ha ha!); And my new fave band at the mo Fat White Family – and their track Garden of The Numb. Their album drops monday, you wanna get it, it’s killer! Ok, I will try and be a little more consistent with this.. Enjoy! oxo gd

Here We Go Again!

259351_399805290080706_206780630_o I am truly getting bored with making these announcements, but sadly, Grande Dame’s Gig Headlining Weirdsville May 25th is CANCELED!! UGH! The gig is still on!! Just not with us!! It’s been a difficult few months… Back in Nov I had to cancel cos I decided to move house & I couldn’t do both. Then Feb 2nd The Pub we were sched to play, had their music license revoked. Now a few of my guys got other band bookings that pay much better than I do and that is why we had to pull out… With my old band Crazy Girl, I had a revolving door of musicians, in fact some people called me the female Mark E Smith cos I had so many different players… But I didn’t want to do that with this project. I want to stick with my core group, as I know it will always be top notch… But it’s difficult when you have a band of working musicians to be able to get them all together at the same time!! I guess for now I just have to concentrate on becoming a famous artist, so that one day I can compete with the salaries their other bands pay… I’m sure Weirdsville is gonna be awesome. I am going to see the Barbicans down here on the 21st, I have heard smashing things about them. So go see them!! Grande Dame will be back one day…. Or will we??? Here’s a smashing track by the Barbicans!! oxo gd

Fat White Family New Vid!! MAD BAD & TOTALLY RAD!!!

Electronic Beats Videodrome 90 Fat White Family Cream of the Young Video-10 (dragged)A few months back I did a post about my new FAVE BAND – Fat White Family. They had their album streaming on sound cloud for a bit & it totally blew me away!! Like Velvets/ Stooges/ Beefhart/ Weird War/ Black Lips… just KILLER basically! They’ve since taken it down as it comes out March 18th on Trashmouth Records. I have been jonezin to hear it bad too… Luckily they gotta new vid out for one of their tracks – Cream of The Young… And just like their sound, the vid is heavy & mental!! Love it!! And totally crushing on the boy missing a front tooth! Hot! Check it out!! You will love them!! oxo gd

The Strange Story of Joe Meek

original_joemeek1 The other day my friend PJ from Dirty Water Records posted this quirky little doc on legendary 60′s pop music producer – Joe Meek. I am sure I had seen it before, but it was a perfect Sunday after noon watch. With archive sound recordings and footage, plus interviews with friends and family, it was complied together nicely with humour. Esp love the vintage footage of Screamin Lord Sutch!! OMG! He was so dreamy when he was young!! I love Joe Meeks music! And hum Telstar at least 5 times a day (along with Enoch Lights version of Caravan!!). I even have a Joe Meek vocal compressor which I bought 18 years ago and have done all my vocal recordings through it! What a waste and sad story. If he had been allowed to live his life openly as a gay man, and if he had received his royalties on all his hit records, I wonder if he would have still snapped?? Who knows… But what a brilliant mind! Anyhoo, enjoy this cute doc!! oxo gd

GIG CANCELLED! WAAH!

Luxgigsm
So gutted to wake up this morning and check my messages to find out our gig is off! Apparently the venue lost it’s live music license and the council & police have threatened to shut them down!! There will still be DJ’s playing Cramps sounds, but just no Grande dame Live…So, that’s that… So disappointed! I have been practicing & learning the tracks, fasting to fit into my pvc dress, and have abstained from alcohol or any contact with humans out of fear of getting a cold!! Waah! Oh well, that’s rock & roll! We will be back soon! Watch this space! oxo gd

The Cramps Live At Napa State Mental Hospital

Well, it’s a week & one day exactly until our live show!! Our first in over a year! Wow! I must say, I am very excited and quite relaxed about it!! Of course you know we are playing the Lux Interior Memorial Party at the Royal Sovereign Sat Feb 2nd! And I can confirm, that we will be doing a few Cramps songs on the night! Yay! This will be a super fun show indeed!! I have always loved The Cramps, I had a massive Date With Elvis poster on my bedroom wall as a teenager. And I was very lucky to see them live in 1989, in New Orleans, at the legendary club – Tipitina’s. Some of you die hard Cramps fans will already be familiar with this footage. Shot in 1978 at The Napa State Mental Hospital in California. They were on tour with The Mutants, promoting their Gravest Hits album. I love this so much! Everybody is having a brilliant time. And what a cool thing to do! This is my fave track from the set – The Way I Walk. You can see a longer edit of their show here. And don’t forget to come see us next Sat in Hackney! It’s totally free! oxo gd
